Entry #2 Interview with an ELL student

Welcome to my second Vblog! In this Vblog I interviewed a student who was considered an ELL student in elementary school. This person was taught English in a US Public school system. My guest's first language was Spanish and they only spoke Spanish at home. They have a very similiar language background as I do.

They informed me that their teacher used mostly syntax lessons to teach them English. From what my interviewee explained, they began in Level 1: Entering and quickly made it to level 5: Bridging. Wright states, (2015) "Students need to learn all the registers of the subjects they study in school, each with its peculiar vocabulary and whatever other linguistic features that inhere" (p.44). The teacher that my interviewee had seemed to have provided syntax lessons that made her students learn all of the necessary steps in order to fall under the Bridging level. I mostly impressed by the fact that there were many other students that were considered ELL and they also leveled up to Level 5 in the end. Wright explains, "Knowledge of language is relevant to the many roles teachers play as communicators, educators, evaluators, educated human beings, and agents of socialization" (p.47). This is something I will always keep in mind as a future teacher who will eventually have ELL students in the classroom.
